The family of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has shed light on why he asked Justice Binta Nyako to step down from presiding over his case.
According to the family, Kanu’s request stemmed from Justice Nyako’s refusal to adhere to the Supreme Court’s ruling regarding his case. They expressed disappointment that the judge did not restore Kanu’s bail, which had been revoked, despite the apex court’s judgment.
Prince Emmanuel Kanu, speaking on behalf of the family, stated that Justice Nyako’s decision to recuse herself was long overdue and a step in the right direction. He emphasized that the family had lost confidence in her impartiality, accusing the judge of bias against Kanu.

“The reason Nnamdi Kanu sought her recusal was due to her refusal to comply with the Supreme Court’s orders,” the family said. “We believe she was neither willing nor ready to execute the directives of the apex court, which is why we lost faith in her handling of the case.”

They further reiterated that Kanu should not be on trial in Nigeria, arguing that his extraordinary rendition from Kenya violated international laws and legal protocols. As a result, the family believes the federal government no longer has the right to prosecute him.
The family remains hopeful that the new judge assigned to the case will respect the Supreme Court’s prior judgment and address the legal inconsistencies surrounding Kanu’s abduction and rendition.
