Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, recently addressed his absence from the party’s National Convention in Nnewi, Anambra State. Speaking to supporters on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Obi expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of consultation by the party’s leadership, emphasizing his commitment to nation-building over party interests.
Obi highlighted his advice to the party chairman, urging comprehensive consultations with key stakeholders, including Governor Alex Otti and Vice Presidential Candidate Yusuf Datti, before the convention. He stressed the importance of grassroots organization through congresses to address existing challenges effectively.
Concerns over financial accountability within the party were also raised by Obi, who disclosed plans for an independent audit of both the Labour Party’s and his campaign’s finances. He invoked consequences from a higher authority for those failing to provide transparent financial reports.

Contrary to the LP’s assertion of following due process, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) disowned the Nnewi convention, citing breaches of electoral rules. INEC’s Chief Press Secretary, Rotimi Oyekanmi, clarified the commission’s stance, emphasizing the importance of adherence to electoral regulations.
In response, LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, defended the convention’s legitimacy, citing an official notification sent to INEC well within the stipulated timeframe. Despite the controversy, the LP aims to consolidate its membership base and strengthen the party moving forward.
