The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Abuja chapter, has initiated an indefinite strike to highlight grievances surrounding the union’s affairs.
Following a congress held at the institution’s Permanent Site, ASUU UniAbuja announced the commencement of the strike, citing concerns related to the appointment process of a new Vice-Chancellor (VC).
Tensions have escalated between ASUU members and the outgoing VC, Prof. Abdulrasheed Na’allah, along with the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, regarding the procedures for selecting Na’allah’s successor.
An advertisement published in a national daily on March 15, 2024, calling for Na’Allah’s replacement triggered the dispute.
ASUU UniAbuja condemned the ad during a conference, branding it as “illegal” and clarifying that it did not originate from the governing council.
Chairman of UniAbuja ASUU, Sylvanus Ugoh, emphasized that according to the Universities Miscellaneous Provision Act 1993, as amended in 2003 and 2012 (Section 3, subsections 1 and 2), only the governing council holds the authority to advertise the VC position when vacant.
Ugoh reiterated that no other entity or individual possesses the legal mandate to initiate the appointment process for a new VC.
“The university administration released an advertisement for the Vice-Chancellor position on Friday, March 15th, 2024,” remarked Ugoh.
