In a bid to prioritize British workers and reduce migration, the UK government has announced a significant increase in the minimum salary threshold for immigrants entering the country on Skilled Worker visas. Effective immediately, the threshold has been raised from £26,200 to £38,700.
Home Secretary James Cleverly stated that the 48% wage hike aims to discourage excessive migration and protect the interests of British workers from being undercut by employers seeking cheaper labor abroad.
Under the new regulations, UK businesses hiring skilled workers from overseas will be required to pay substantially higher wages. This move is part of the government’s broader strategy to curtail the influx of foreign labor and fulfill its pledge to prioritize the recruitment of highly skilled individuals, thereby bolstering the UK economy while reducing overall migration figures.

In addition to the salary increase, the government has abolished the shortage occupation list, preventing employers from paying migrant workers less than their UK counterparts in designated shortage occupations. Instead, a new Immigration Salary List (ISL) has been established in consultation with the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC), which will only include skilled roles facing shortages and ensure that British workers are not disadvantaged.
This initiative coincides with the government’s Back to Work plan, a £2.5 billion investment aimed at facilitating employment opportunities for over a million individuals facing long-term unemployment, sickness, or disability. Home Secretary James Cleverly emphasized the importance of ending the reliance on cheap foreign labor and refocusing the immigration system to attract the best talent while reducing overall migration numbers.
The government’s commitment to immigration reform extends to previous measures, such as the recent restriction on postgraduate students bringing dependents to the UK, which is expected to contribute to a significant decline in such applications.
The overarching goal is to create a fairer immigration system that prioritizes the interests of British workers and fosters economic growth through the recruitment of high-skilled individuals, ultimately benefiting both the workforce and the nation as a whole.
