U.S. House Oversight Committee Summons Secret Service Director Over Assassination Attempt on Trump

The U.S. House of Representatives’ Oversight Committee has summoned Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to testify following the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. The incident occurred at a political rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, July 13, 2024, and has sparked a demand for answers from the American public.

During the rally, Trump narrowly escaped serious injury after being shot. “I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear,” Trump recounted. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) identified the assailant as 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, who fired multiple gunshots, resulting in one fatality and two other injuries.

The Secret Service reported that Crooks had positioned himself in an elevated spot outside the rally before being “neutralized” by agents on the scene.

James Comer, Chairman of the Oversight Committee, issued a strong condemnation of the attack and expressed his concerns on the committee’s website. In his statement titled “Comer Statement on Assassination Attempt of President Trump,” Comer emphasized the need for transparency and accountability.

“There are many questions and Americans demand answers,” Comer stated. “I have already contacted the Secret Service for a briefing and I am also calling on Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to appear for a hearing. The Oversight Committee will send a formal invitation soon.”

Comer highlighted the importance of addressing political violence, describing it as “un-American and unacceptable.” He extended his prayers to Trump and the other victims, and praised the Secret Service agents and attendees who acted heroically during the incident.

Kevin Rojek, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Pittsburgh field office, revealed that Crooks had no identification on him at the time of the attack. Agents had to rely on DNA and biometric analysis to confirm his identity, as reported by CNN.

As the investigation continues, the Oversight Committee’s demand for Director Cheatle’s testimony underscores the seriousness of the situation. The upcoming hearing aims to shed light on the circumstances of the attack and evaluate the response measures taken by the Secret Service.

This incident has reignited the debate on political violence and the safety measures in place for public figures. The American public, alongside government officials, awaits further developments and answers to pressing questions surrounding this alarming event.
