Nsukka town in Enugu State has been thrown into turmoil following the deaths of two individuals in violent clashes allegedly caused by Oriokpa masquerades. The incidents, which occurred on Tuesday, have reignited fears surrounding the unchecked aggression of these traditional performers, raising fresh concerns over public safety.
The first fatality was a middle-aged woman who tragically lost her life while attempting to flee from a masquerade along Aku Road in the Obechara area. Witnesses reported that the victim was struck by an oncoming truck in her frantic attempt to escape, leaving the scene in disarray and residents shaken by the chaotic events.
In a separate incident at Nru Junction, a male student from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), died under unclear circumstances. The nature of the student’s death has sparked widespread alarm and further heightened tensions within the community.
These tragic incidents come just one week after hundreds of women from Eha-Alumona, a neighboring community in Nsukka Local Government Area, took to the streets in protest against the frequent attacks and harassment perpetrated by masquerades. The women expressed their frustrations, demanding an end to the violence and calling on the government and authorities to intervene.
In a statement made during the protest, one of the women lamented the conduct of the masquerades, saying, “The boys behind the masks have forgotten that they were born of women, and now they terrorize their own mothers, sisters, and daughters.”

This isn’t the first time the Oriokpa masquerades have come under public scrutiny. Back in April 2024, a viral video surfaced showing the brutal flogging of a nurse on her way to work by the same group. The attack, which took place in Obechara, saw the woman beaten and thrown into a roadside drainage as she pleaded for mercy. That video prompted national outrage, with human rights organizations and women’s advocacy groups demanding immediate action. Despite these calls, the violent activities of the Oriokpa masquerades have persisted.
As of now, the Enugu State Police Command has not released an official statement regarding the Tuesday incidents. Attempts to reach the Command’s spokesman, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, for comment have been unsuccessful. However, police sources have indicated that investigations are underway to bring the perpetrators to justice.
