Tragedy Strikes Niger Mining Site: 1 Dead, Dozens Trapped in Collapse

A devastating incident has occurred at a mining site in Galkogo village, Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger, resulting in one fatality and over 30 individuals trapped beneath the rubble, as confirmed by the state Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA).

According to NSEMA, one person has been confirmed deceased, while six others have been rescued with severe injuries. However, the situation remains dire as more than 30 individuals are still trapped under the debris.

Director-General of NSEMA, Alhaji Abdullahi Baba-Arah, revealed that the collapse occurred on June 3, attributing it to the adverse effects of heavy rainfall on the soil.

Expressing grave concerns, Baba-Arah highlighted the challenges faced by rescuers, who were forced to retreat due to ongoing collapses at the site. Despite the obstacles, excavators have been mobilized for rescue efforts.

Compounding the tragedy, Baba-Arah reported persistent bandit attacks in Shiroro and Mashegu local government areas, citing an abduction incident in Adogo Malam village on June 2, where six individuals were kidnapped. Additionally, more than 20 people were reportedly abducted, and numerous cattle were stolen in Tunga Kawo, an adjacent community from Erena.

The situation remains fluid, with insecurity hindering comprehensive rescue operations and exacerbating the plight of those affected by the mining site collapse.
