Tragedy: Six Dead, 20 Injured in Anambra Building Collapse

A building under construction collapsed on Monday evening at Odu-Igbo Market in Ochanja, Onitsha North Local Government Area of Anambra State, resulting in the loss of six lives and leaving 20 individuals injured.

Governor Charles Soludo swiftly responded to the crisis, visiting the scene on Tuesday to assess the situation firsthand. Expressing profound sorrow over the incident, Governor Soludo labeled it as “tragic,” emphasizing the urgent need for rescue operations.

Addressing concerned residents at the site, Governor Soludo confirmed the retrieval of five bodies from the rubble and the successful rescue of 26 individuals trapped beneath the debris. He pledged relentless efforts to locate any remaining victims while lamenting the avoidable nature of the catastrophe.

Further investigation revealed that the collapsed structure lacked the necessary government approval, prompting Governor Soludo to pledge stringent action against illegal constructions across the state. Vowing to overhaul safety measures, he announced plans for a comprehensive inventory of buildings in markets and public areas, with a focus on identifying and dismantling unsafe structures.
