Tobi Amusan Sets New Record At 60m Hurdle

At the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston, Nigerian sprinter Tobi Amusan set a new African women’s indoor record in the 60-meter event with a time of 7.75 seconds.

The previous record of 7.77 seconds, achieved in Kazakhstan at the Astana Indoor Meet in January, has been surpassed with this run in Boston.

Even though she broke the previous record, she was not first in Boston; Tia Jones of America took first place with a time of 7.72 seconds, followed by Devynne Chalton of the Bahamas with a time of 7.76 seconds.

Notably, on January 27, Amusan broke the African record in her first race of the new sporting season, beating the mark set by her fellow countrywoman Gloria Alozie.

With a time of 7.77 seconds, she had established a new African women’s indoor 60-meter hurdles record in January.

The act took place at the Kazakhstani Astana Indoor Meet.

Gloria Alozie, a fellow Nigerian, set a long-standing continental record in 1999 with 7.82 seconds, but Amusan broke it.

In the 60-meter hurdles final, the 26-year-old easily defeated Ireland’s Sarah Lavin and American Nia Ali.

Amusan became the first Nigerian to win a gold medal at the World Athletics Championship in 2022. On her way to the victory, she also set a world record in the women’s 100-meter hurdles.
