Tinubu Holds Meeting with FG Delegation on Minimum Wage at Aso Rock

President Bola Tinubu convened a high-level meeting with representatives of the Federal Government team from the Tripartite Committee on the New National Minimum Wage at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Ahead of the scheduled resumption of negotiations between organised labour and the federal government, President Tinubu engaged with key government officials including Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, Minister of Budget and National Planning, Atiku Bagudu, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, and CEO of the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited, Melee Kyari.

This strategic meeting, occurring amidst the ongoing strike by organised labour over unresolved negotiations on the new minimum wage and demands for electricity tariff reversal, underscores the urgency of reaching a consensus.

The objective of the meeting is to apprise President Tinubu of the current negotiation status and solicit his commitment towards a revised offer, especially following the rejection of the government’s initial N60,000 proposal by labour unions.

Recent discussions between Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Senator George Akume, and labour leaders resulted in President Tinubu’s agreement to increase the minimum wage offer beyond N60,000. Consequently, negotiations are set to resume daily for one week to finalize discussions on the new wage.

Following the resolution reached at the National Executive Council meeting at the Labour House, Abuja, which led to the suspension of the nationwide strike, organised labour reaffirmed its commitment to engaging in fruitful negotiations with the government.

Prior engagements between the leadership of the National Assembly and organised labour emphasized the importance of finding a middle ground to resolve the impasse. It was reiterated that the government should continue honouring the N35,000 wage award until a new minimum wage agreement is reached and implemented.
