The Nigerian Presidency drew a comparison between Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, and former U.S. President Donald Trump. Temitope Ajayi, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Bola Tinubu, made the remark on the social media platform X, suggesting that Obi mirrors the political tactics of Trump, who is running for the U.S. 2024 elections.
Ajayi’s comments followed a U.S. presidential debate between Trump and Democratic candidate Vice President Kamala Harris. During the debate, Harris and Trump faced off on various issues, including abortion rights and immigration policies.
“Peter Obi is Nigeria’s version of Donald Trump. Just like Trump, Obi uses harsh criticism to paint a negative image of the country he aspires to lead, appealing to his base,” Ajayi stated.
Ajayi further praised Vice President Harris for her strong performance during the debate, noting that she outmaneuvered Trump by highlighting his weaknesses. According to Ajayi, Trump repeatedly fell into Harris’s traps and made several incorrect claims. Fact-checkers reportedly found that Trump made 33 false statements during the 90-minute debate, while Harris only made one.

Despite being corrected during the debate, Trump continued to repeat conspiracy theories, especially regarding the 2020 election and immigration. He made a controversial claim that immigrants were consuming the pets of U.S. residents, a statement refuted by local authorities.
The 2024 U.S. elections are set to take place on November 5, with both Trump and Harris vying for their party’s support in the race to the White House.
