Distilleries are requested by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, or NAFDAC, to cease manufacturing alcoholic beverages in sachets and pet bottles with a capacity of less than 200 milliliters.
The call was made during a two-day enforcement campaign on Monday in Ota, Ogun, by Mr. Kazeem Adeniran, the Assistant Chief Regulator Officer of the Investigation and Enforcement Department, NAFDAC, Lagos.
Adeniran emphasized that part of the agreement reached by a tripartite committee established in 2018 was for distillers, under the Distillers and Blenders Association of Nigeria, or DIBAN, to cease producing alcohol in sachets and pet bottles with a capacity of less than 200 milliliters as of January 31.

According to Adeniran, the committee was established in 2018 by the Federal Ministry of Health in collaboration with other stakeholders to address alcohol addiction, particularly among young people. Members of the committee included NAFDAC and DIBAN.
“When we conducted this enforcement operation, these companies were still manufacturing such alcohols under 200ml, which is not supposed to be the case.
“After the 2018 meeting, it was made very clear that they should start producing alcohol above 200 milliliters and cease producing such alcohol in sachets and pet bottles by 2024,” he said.
