Urum Kalu Eke, a nominee for the CBN Board of Directors, has declined the appointment, citing conflicts with his current engagement with the World Bank. The announcement surfaced during Thursday’s Senate plenary session, where the confirmation process for nominees commenced.
President Bola Tinubu had nominated Urum and four others on February 13 for confirmation to the CBN board. However, during the confirmation session, Senator Orji Kalu revealed that Urum had personally informed him of his decision to reject the offer, expressing concerns about the potential conflict with his role as a consultant for the World Bank, various Federal Government agencies, and private companies.
However, the Senate confirmed the appointments of four other nominees to the CBN Board of Directors. Confirmed directors include Robert Agbede, Ado Yakubu Wanka, Professor Murtala Sabo Sagagi, and Mrs. Muslimat Olanike Aliyu.
The confirmation follows the consideration of a screening report presented by Senator Adetokunbo Abiru, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance & Other Financial Institutions. Notably, Urum Kalu Eke’s confirmation was not cleared due to his absence during the screening process.
