South East members of the National Assembly have called on Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to arrest and prosecute those promoting anti-Igbo sentiments in the South West. This call to action was made through a petition submitted to the police headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday.
The petition, signed by Enyinnaya Abaribe, leader of the South East Senate Caucus, and Igariwey Enwo, leader of the House of Representatives, highlights a concerning anti-Igbo post dated July 27 from the X account @Lagospedia. The post called for a massive protest under the hashtag #IgboMustGo, scheduled for August 20 to 30, urging Igbos to leave the South West and relocate their businesses. It also advised Yorubas in the South East to return to their home region.
Despite the deactivation of the @Lagospedia account on August 3, the harmful message continues to spread across social media, prompting widespread vitriol against the Igbo community.

The petition reads, “It is on record that a Yoruba man initiated the call for the protest, and leaders of the South East have urged our people not to join the protest. This has contributed to the relative peace we are experiencing, as there have been minimal protests.”
The South East Caucus emphasized the need for unity and protection of citizens’ rights, stating, “Nigeria is home to all of us, and as we strive to keep this country on the path of growth and greatness, it is essential that every part of the country feels a sense of belonging. This can only be achieved when relevant government bodies protect the rights of all individuals.”
