South Africa to Revoke Miss Universe Nigeria Chidimma Adetshina’s Identity and Travel Documents

South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs has moved to revoke Miss Universe Nigeria Chidimma Adetshina’s South African identity and travel documents, sparking international attention. The Department informed a parliamentary committee on Tuesday about its decision, citing issues surrounding her nationality.

Adetshina, a law student who recently won the Miss Universe Nigeria title, initially faced scrutiny while participating in the Miss South Africa pageant due to her mother’s Mozambican origins and her Nigerian father’s nationality. This led to an investigation, especially after claims that her mother might have engaged in “identity theft” to obtain South African citizenship surfaced.

In August, Adetshina withdrew from the Miss South Africa pageant as these issues came to light. She later expressed to the BBC that the intense public response, including xenophobic comments from some South Africans, had affected her deeply, and she anticipated needing therapy to recover.

Tommy Makhode, a senior official in the Department of Home Affairs, announced that Adetshina and her mother would lose their identity documents after failing to provide evidence supporting their legal status in South Africa. The case has been handed over to the Hawks, South Africa’s special police unit handling high-profile crimes, who have labeled it a “case of fraud.” Authorities are awaiting further guidance from prosecutors.

The Department also clarified that Adetshina was not involved in her mother’s alleged actions, as she was an infant when the initial identity issues arose. Despite the controversy, Adetshina has maintained her dual pride, affirming herself as “proudly South African” and “proudly Nigerian” to the BBC.

Adetshina recently arrived in Mexico, where she will represent Nigeria in the Miss Universe competition on November 16, competing alongside contestants worldwide, including Mia le Roux, Miss South Africa 2024.
