Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has taken significant steps to resolve the ongoing communal conflict in Ogwuaniocha, Ogbaru Local Government Area, by setting up a commission of enquiry. The crisis, which has displaced over 5,000 residents since 2021 and led to increased criminality, has drawn commendation from Afam Ogene, a member of the House of Representatives representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency.
Ogene praised Soludo for forming the 13-member commission, chaired by Justice C.E.K Anigbogu (retd.), with Prof. Felicia Anyogu as Secretary. He highlighted the potential of the commission to reduce violence in Ogwuaniocha and across Anambra State. He urged stakeholders to embrace reconciliation efforts for lasting peace and development in the area.
The panel, inaugurated on October 4, 2024, aims to gather insights into the crisis by requesting memoranda from interested parties, with oral evidence to be collected subsequently. The commission’s goal is to facilitate peace in the community, which has endured violence, fear, and lawlessness, including the abduction of the traditional ruler in 2021.
Ogene, who has been advocating for government intervention in Ogwuaniocha, previously appealed to the governor and sponsored a motion in the House of Representatives, highlighting the community’s plight and requesting relief materials for displaced residents. He emphasized the importance of restoring peace in the oil-bearing community, which contributes over 20,000 barrels of crude oil daily and is vital for Anambra’s economy.
