The Simon Ekpa-led Biafra Republic Government In-Exile (BRGIE) has reiterated its call for the immediate release of its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, and other political detainees. The BRGIE has warned of shutting down all Nigerian government offices in the South-East if their demands are not met.
Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has been in detention since his arrest in 2021, despite widespread calls from lawmakers and political figures for his release. The demand for Kanu’s release has also been a key issue for the EndBadGovernance protesters nationwide.
In a recent statement on his official X handle, Simon Ekpa, the Prime Minister of BRGIE, also called for the demilitarization of the South-East and recognition of the Biafra Referendum.
Ekpa’s statement included the following demands:
– Withdrawal of all Nigerian security forces from Biafra territory.
– Acceptance of the Biafra Self Referendum, which has garnered over 49 million votes.
– Release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and other Biafra political prisoners.
Ekpa emphasized that the proposed shutdown would not affect traders, markets, businesses, banks, and hospitals. Further details of the shutdown will be disclosed during the next State of the Union address.
