Senator Orji Uzor Kalu Advocates for Part-Time Legislature to Reduce Costs and Boost Public Trust

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Privatisation, has proposed the introduction of part-time legislative roles at both the federal and state levels. The senator, representing APC-Abia North, believes this move could significantly lower government expenditures and enhance public confidence in Nigeria’s political system.

Senator Kalu shared his insights in an interview on his verified Facebook page, emphasizing the financial benefits of a part-time legislature. He suggested that lawmakers could meet for three months to conduct constitutional amendments, convening quarterly with provisions for emergency sessions.

This proposal aims to streamline legislative processes, promoting efficient governance without the necessity of full-time legislative operations. “All legislative bodies in Nigeria, including the Senate and the House of Representatives, should operate on a part-time basis,” Kalu stated.

Senator Kalu also introduced the idea of regional government as a cost-saving measure. He suggested that ministers and legislators could be the same under this system, which would further reduce the financial burden on the government. “I’ve been contemplating ways to save money for Nigeria, as the country urgently needs financial prudence,” he explained.

The senator called on the President and the National Assembly to consider these legislative changes, highlighting their potential to benefit the nation. He addressed the misconception that senators receive excessive compensation, stressing the importance of constitutional amendments to support part-time legislative sessions.

Kalu concluded by asserting that these measures would bring trust and relief to the Nigerian people, reflecting his ongoing commitment to creating a more efficient and trustworthy political system in Nigeria.
