Senate Launches Probe into Electricity Tariff Hike

The Nigerian Senate has kicked off an investigative hearing to delve into the recent surge in electricity tariffs across 11 states in the country.

During the ongoing session at the Senate wing of the National Assembly, the Red Chamber pledged to hold accountable any individual or entity found responsible for exacerbating the financial strain and hardships faced by Nigerians.

Last week, the Senate’s Committee on Power extended invitations to Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and heads of agencies under the ministry for a thorough examination of the new electricity tariffs.

Committee chairman Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe confirmed that the Senate had greenlit an investigative hearing, scheduled for April 29, 2024. Key government agencies will be subjected to questioning regarding the tariff hike, including the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the Minister of Power.

Abaribe emphasized that the investigative hearing was prompted by two motions presented during plenary sessions in July 2023 and February 2024, where the Senate was mandated to engage with relevant stakeholders and propose comprehensive sector reforms to address challenges in the Nigerian Electricity Sector.

Furthermore, the committee is tasked with investigating the alleged over N2 trillion subsidy requirement, the Ministry of Power’s debt of N1.3 trillion to generating companies, and $1.3 billion owed to gas companies. The failed agreement between the Ministry of Power, NERC, and ZIGLAKS COMPANY to provide meters is also under scrutiny to ensure fair treatment of Nigerians.

Additionally, stakeholders are urged to clarify the transition from previous customer classes to the present BANDS for electricity customers.

Senator Abaribe reiterated the committee’s commitment to promptly carry out the investigation to alleviate the plight of Nigerians, emphasizing that strict sanctions await any individual or agency found guilty of wrongdoing.
