The Nigerian Senate held a solemn valedictory session on Tuesday to honor the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who represented Anambra South Senatorial District in the National Assembly. The session marked a significant moment of tribute to the contributions and legacy of the senator, who passed away earlier this year.
The proceedings began with the late senator’s casket lying in state at the foyer of the White House wing, directly in front of the Senate Chamber. The day’s agenda featured only one item, aptly titled “Valedictory Session,” emphasizing the importance of the occasion.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, in a show of cultural respect, donned traditional Isi-Enyi attire, complemented by a red cap and dark sunglasses. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele also embraced tradition, wearing Isi-Agwu attire.
Senator Ubah’s seat in the chamber was adorned with flowers and draped in fabric painted in the colors of the Nigerian flag, symbolizing his service to the nation.
The session welcomed non-senators, allowing dignitaries, family members, and other invited guests to participate in the tributes. Notable attendees included Vice President Kashim Shettima, former Anambra State Governor Chris Ngige, and former Senator Uche Ekwunife.
The presence of Senate leaders’ spouses, such as Ekaette Akpabio, Hajiya Jibrin Barau, and Oluyemisi Bamidele, added a touch of familial solidarity to the occasion.
Earlier in the day, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, led a delegation of House leaders in a solemn procession around the senator’s casket, underscoring the collective grief and respect across both legislative chambers.
During the session, senators reflected on Senator Ubah’s impactful contributions to legislative debates and his commitment to representing the interests of his constituents. The atmosphere was sombre, with tributes highlighting his passion, dedication, and vision for a better Nigeria.
Senator Ifeanyi Ubah’s funeral is scheduled for Friday, November 22, 2024, in his hometown. His legacy continues to resonate as a reminder of service, leadership, and dedication to the Nigerian people.
