Senate Approves Death Penalty Against Drug Offenses

Abuja—In a decisive move, the Senate has endorsed stringent penalties for those involved in the production, processing, and trafficking of dangerous drugs within the nation’s borders.

The newly approved measures include the imposition of the death penalty for manufacturers and processors of hazardous drugs, alongside severe punishment for drug traffickers. Individuals caught in possession of hard drugs will face up to 15 years imprisonment, with no option of a fine, reflecting the grave consequences of substance abuse in the country.

This decision follows a comprehensive review of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024 (HB. 472), presented by Senator Mohammed Monguno (APC, Borno North), and subsequent deliberations by the Committees on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, and Drugs and Narcotics.

The urgency of this amendment stems from the alarming prevalence of substance abuse among the youth population, often influenced by peer pressure.

During the deliberation, Senator Ali Ndume (APC, Borno South), and Senator Peter Nwebonyi (APC, Ebonyi North) proposed an amendment to institute the death penalty for drug traffickers, emphasizing the need to fortify the agency’s operations.

While some dissenting voices were raised, Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin (APC, Kano North), upheld the majority decision in favor of the amendment.

Chairman of the Committee, Senator Mohammed Monguno, highlighted the significance of these amendments in combating the scourge of drug abuse, underscoring the Senate’s commitment to safeguarding the nation’s future from the detrimental effects of substance abuse.

The bill, having passed through the Senate, awaits reconciliation with the version passed by the House of Representatives before it is forwarded to the President for assent.
