Rivers State Assembly Elects New Speaker, Disregards Amaewhule-led Faction

 

In a recent session, the Rivers State House of Assembly, aligned with Governor Siminalayi Fubara, appointed Rt. Hon. Victor Oko-Jumbo as the new speaker, replacing Rt. Hon. Edison Ogerenya Ehie. The assembly invalidated all actions taken by the factional group led by Hon. Martin Amaewhule, emphasizing their allegiance to the law. Speaker Oko-Jumbo assured his dedication to advancing the state, highlighting the need for unity.

 

The assembly underscored the legality of its actions following the resignation of Ehie, adhering to constitutional provisions. Speaker Oko-Jumbo denounced the alleged legislative misconduct by the former members, emphasizing their awareness of legal protocols regarding party defections. He emphasized the assembly’s commitment to upholding the law, referencing legal precedents.

Additionally, he called on Governor Fubara to cease interactions with the former lawmakers, affirming the assembly’s stance. Oko-Jumbo expressed readiness to collaborate with the governor for the state’s progress.

 

After the session, Speaker Oko-Jumbo urged public support for Governor Fubara’s administration, while Hon. Sokari Goodboy reiterated the assembly’s dedication to the state’s development. Meanwhile, Mr. David Wariboko, allegedly suspended by the factional group, resumed his duties under Speaker Oko-Jumbo’s leadership, signaling a shift in the assembly’s dynamics.
