The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has escalated tensions by demanding the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara amid a brewing dispute over cement prices. The call for impeachment follows Governor Fubara’s criticism of the state House of Assembly and its recent legislative actions.
Chairman of the Rivers APC, Chief Tony Okocha, announced the directive during a press conference in Port Harcourt. Okocha cited Governor Fubara’s alleged disregard for the authority of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and failure to uphold agreements aimed at resolving the state’s political crisis as reasons for the impeachment demand.
Background: Governor Fubara and the State House of Assembly have been at odds over the passage of the Amended State’s Procurement Bill. The Assembly recently overrode the governor’s veto to pass the bill into law, prompting a backlash from Governor Fubara.
Reacting to the assembly’s actions, Governor Fubara questioned the legitimacy of the lawmakers and accused them of existing solely at his discretion. He emphasized his role in the Abuja peace accord, brokered by President Tinubu, as the basis for the lawmakers’ continued presence.
In response to Governor Fubara’s remarks, the APC in Rivers State intensified its stance, urging the 27 lawmakers loyal to Minister Nyesom Wike to initiate impeachment proceedings against the governor. Tony Okocha stressed the party’s commitment to upholding party discipline and constitutional provisions if the assembly fails to act.
The escalating feud underscores deepening political divisions in Rivers State, with implications for the state’s governance and stability. As tensions mount, the political landscape remains fluid, with potential repercussions for all stakeholders involved.
