On Thursday, the House of Representatives advanced a bill aiming to establish a fresh state in the southeastern region, to be named Orlu State.
Championed by Ikeagwuonu Ugochinyere from Imo State’s Ideato North South constituency, the bill garnered support from several co-sponsoring lawmakers.
The proposed legislation, if ratified, will amend the 1999 Constitution, elevating Nigeria’s state count from 36 to 37. Orlu State, with its capital in Orlu, will be carved out of segments of Imo, Abia, and Anambra states.

Outlined in the bill are plans to integrate 28 local government areas into Orlu State, encompassing various communities such as Orlu, Orsu, and Ideato North.
Ugochinyere, emphasizing the significance of the bill, called upon his colleagues to endorse it during the forthcoming readings, highlighting the potential establishment of Ideato as a senatorial district.
This move is notable given that, unlike other regions with a minimum of six states, the South-East currently comprises only five.
