The House of Representatives Committee on Public Petition has entered the land dispute between the Obeagu and Amechi-Uwani Awkunanaw communities, as well as the developers of Private Estates International West Africa limited (PEIWA) in the state’s Enugu South local council, as part of the ongoing efforts to maintain peace in the political system.
At its meeting last Friday, the committee, which is chaired by Mike Etaba, assured the opposing parties that justice will be done in this case.
Etaba gave the committee’s lawyer instructions to find out whether any court rulings exist regarding the matter.
The lawmaker accused Akinbayo Olasoji, the deputy commissioner of police of the Enugu State Police Command, of participating in the purported attempt to seize the disputed land in Enugu Centenary City in violation of established laws, following the rulers’ claim that the land belonged to the kindred families of Amechi Uwani and Obeagu Awkunanaw of Enugu South.

The displeased community leaders further charged that Uche Anya and SP Chidiebere Ijeoma of the Enugu Capital Territory were involved in the purported violation.
The committee was encouraged to take immediate action against the alleged abuses of the police, who they claimed were giving the land grabbers police cover to harass, threaten, and unfairly drag their members into jail on false accusations.
