“Releasing Nnamdi Kanu Is In Nigeria’s Interest”, Afenifere, Ohanaeze, PANDEF, Others Tell Tinubu

The leaders of the Southern and Middle Belt Forum (SMBLF) have denounced the Nigerian government’s ongoing incarceration of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), on treasonous charges.

The SMBLF published a statement after its meeting in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, expressing concern over the potential impact of Kanu’s imprisonment on the stability and safety of the Southeast region.

The SMBLF denounced the recent establishment of an ethnic militia in Lafia, Nasarawa State, by the Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, during the meeting presided over by Chief Edwin Clark.

It forewarned the administration of President Bola Tinubu not to support the acts.

The group claims that supporting it might compel people of different ethnic backgrounds to form their own militias.

The communique reads in part, “The SMBLF condemns the continued incarceration of Nnamdi Kanu and its implication on peace and security in the South East.

“The SMBFL therefore calls on President Tinubu to ensure that rule of law is allowed to prevail on this matter and all court rulings on this matter are obeyed.

“The release of Nnamdi Kanu is in the interest of the entire country as the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo has promised that they will work with him to restore peace in the region.”

The leaders bemoaned the fact that, as of late, “Plateau, Ekiti, Kwara, Kogi, Benue states, including the Federal Capital Territory Abuja, have become some of the most dangerous places to live in,” denouncing the general condition of insecurity throughout the nation.

Among the regional leaders present are Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide; Chief Ayo Adebanjo of Afenifere; Dr. Pogu Bitrus, National President of the Middle Belt Forum (MBF); and Senator Emmanuel Ibok Essien, National Chairman of the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF).
