President Bola Tinubu has endorsed the reversion to Nigeria’s former national anthem, ‘Nigeria, we hail thee,’ by signing the National Anthem Bill 2024 into law.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio made the announcement during a joint session of the National Assembly, coinciding with Nigeria’s 4th Republic Silver Jubilee and President Tinubu’s administration’s first anniversary.
Tinubu confirmed the reinstatement of ‘Nigeria, we hail thee’ as the country’s latest national anthem.
The joint session, convened primarily to launch the reinstated anthem, saw the abandonment of ‘Arise, O Compatriots,’ which had been in use since 1978, in favor of the former anthem.
Composed in 1960 by Lillian Jean Williams and Frances Berda, ‘Nigeria, we hail thee’ played a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s national identity and unity during its early years.
