In a major move to support the Federal Government’s efforts to ease business operations and combat economic sabotage, the Nigerian police have successfully apprehended 20 individuals accused of unauthorized revenue collection and illegal taxation on the Enugu and Abakaliki-Ebonyi highways.
According to Assistant Commissioner of Police Muyiwa Adejobi, who serves as the Force Public Relations Officer, the arrests represent a crucial step in eliminating illegal activities that hinder economic progress and disrupt the flow of goods on major highways across Nigeria.
The first wave of arrests occurred in the early hours of August 24th, when 14 suspects were apprehended at the boundary between Abakaliki and Ebonyi. Additional arrests followed, including five individuals caught at Abumeje and Ogoja, and one at the Onuakpu area of Ebonyi. These suspects have been charged with economic sabotage and the illegal imposition of multiple taxes on highways.
