The President General of Okon Aku Ohafia, Ohafia LGA, Mecha Ume, has been arrested, according to the Zone 9 Command of the Nigeria Police Force in Umuahia. He is being held for reportedly damaging equipment at an oil plantation in Okon Aku.
Following the identification of Mecha and another community member by several suspects who had already been detained in relation to the event last Wednesday, the two were taken into custody on Saturday.
Last week, three individuals were taken into custody by Nigerian Army personnel as they attempted to remove some equipment that they had damaged on the oil plantation.
For additional investigation, they were turned over to the Zone 9 Police Command.
The Zone 9 Police Command, Umuahia, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Marc Bruno, provided an update on the event on Monday, confirming that the President General had been taken into custody in relation to the incident.
The investigations are still ongoing, he continued.
Dr. Michael Okpara, the Eastern Region’s premier at the time, founded the Eastern Region Estate Investment (EREI), a palm oil plantation, in 1961.
The governor of Abia State had previously issued a warning to vandals to avoid the property while restoration efforts were underway.
