Peter Obi Weighs Potential PDP-LP Merger and Atiku’s Support for Southeast Presidency

Former 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, discusses the potential merger between the Labour Party (LP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Atiku Abubakar’s support for a Southeast candidate in the 2027 presidential election.

In an interview on NoireTV-GlobalBlackTV, Obi acknowledges Atiku’s statement regarding potential support for him as a Southeast candidate and expresses gratitude while emphasizing his focus on Nigeria’s well-being over personal ambition. “I commend him and I’m grateful for his statements, especially where he said he will support me if it (the presidential ticket) goes to the South East,” Obi said.

“I’m not desperate to be president, I’m desperate to see Nigeria work, especially for the poor people because we have a lot of potential,” he stated.

Regarding the PDP-LP merger, Obi expresses openness to the idea if it aims to improve governance and unlock Nigeria’s potential for progress. However, he clarifies that he opposes mergers solely for electoral gains or state capture.

“If it’s just a merger for election or state capture, I’m not for it or part of it, I don’t want to be part of anything like that,” he asserted.

Obi emphasizes the importance of unity and cooperation for the betterment of Nigeria, whether at the party, individual, or any level, as long as the goal is to build a stronger nation. He said, “It might be at the party level, it might be at the individual level, might be at any level, but we must come together to be able to build a better Nigeria.
