Peter Obi Urges Nigerians to Tackle Insecurity and Economic Hardships

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on Nigerians to take decisive action against the worsening insecurity and economic challenges facing the nation.

In light of recent abductions, including the kidnapping of medical students in Benue State and the abduction of an Anambra State commissioner and his wife in Edo State, Obi emphasized the urgency of the situation. “It’s time to declare war on this pervasive insecurity,” he stated.

Taking to X.com on Saturday, Obi wrote, “When I advocate for declaring war on the economy, power issues, and insecurity, some people distort my message, while others express discontent. But what alternatives do we have?”

He highlighted the alarming rate of kidnappings across the country, mentioning specific incidents such as the abduction of approximately 20 dental students from Maiduguri and Jos in Benue State. “An Anambra State Commissioner and his wife were kidnapped in Edo State, and others traveling with them were tragically killed. These incidents are just a snapshot of the many tragedies occurring nationwide,” he added.

As a former governor of Anambra State, Obi stressed the need for a united effort to confront the challenges plaguing Nigeria. “We cannot continue to live under these conditions,” he urged. “It’s time for bold action, collective determination, and a unified stance against these issues.”

Obi called on all Nigerians to take a stand against insecurity and the various other ills threatening society. “We must declare war on these overwhelming challenges and work tirelessly to build a safer, more prosperous, and just society for all,” he concluded.

On Friday, PUNCH Online reported that over 20 medical and dental students, along with a house officer, were kidnapped by armed men in Benue State. The students were en route to the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students annual convention in Enugu when they were ambushed around 5:30 PM in the Otukpo area.

In a related incident, the Commissioner for Youths Development in Anambra State, Patrick Aghamba, and his wife were reportedly kidnapped in Edo State while traveling to Abuja on Friday.
