Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate from the 2023 elections, has announced his intention to sue Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Communication and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, over allegations linking him to planned mass protests against economic hardship in Nigeria.
Obi, through his counsel Chief Alex Ejesieme, SAN, from MADIBA Chambers, condemned the allegations, which were widely circulated in both social and mainstream media. According to Obi, these claims tarnish his reputation, portraying him as someone who endorses violence, contrary to his well-documented stance against it.
On July 20, 2024, Onanuga posted on his X handle, “@aonanuga1956,” accusing Obi’s supporters of orchestrating nationwide protests and holding Obi responsible for any ensuing chaos. He also linked the protest planners to past events, such as the EndSARS protests in October 2020, which he claimed were hijacked by IPOB members.
Obi’s response has been swift and firm. His legal team has demanded a retraction and an apology to be published in four national dailies within 72 hours. They are also seeking N5 billion in damages for the alleged defamation.
Obi’s counsel emphasized the emotional and reputational damage caused by Onanuga’s statements. They asserted that if Onanuga fails to meet their demands, legal proceedings will be initiated for defamation and libel.
