The Peter Obi Media Office has vehemently denied accusations by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga that the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is linked to an alleged planned protest. The media office labeled these claims as unfounded and part of a plot to arrest Obi.
In a detailed post on his verified X handle, Onanuga asserted that Obi’s supporters were organizing nationwide protests against the Tinubu administration. He accused them of intending to destabilize Nigeria, comparing the planned demonstrations to the violent aftermath of the ENDSARS protests in October 2020. Onanuga urged security agencies to investigate the organizers, claiming they aim to incite disorder rather than wait for the next election in 2027.
However, Yunusa Tanko, spokesman for the Peter Obi Media Office, refuted these allegations in a statement. Tanko accused the presidency of attempting to suppress Obi’s advocacy for good governance, which they find threatening to their luxurious lifestyle. He emphasized that Obi has consistently promoted peaceful engagement and has never been associated with violence, even under provocation.
“The allegations are baseless and are being used as a pretext to arrest Obi and limit his freedom,” Tanko stated. “These claims are part of a strategy to distract Nigerians and tarnish Obi’s reputation.”
The media office highlighted that hired detractors are working to silence Obi and mislead the public. They urged Nigerians to disregard the presidency’s accusations, asserting that Obi and his supporters remain committed to their vision for a better Nigeria.
“All issues linked to Obi, from fuel subsidy fallout to increasing poverty and inflation, are misattributed,” Tanko added. “The Peter Obi Media Office encourages Nigerians to stay focused on the real challenges and ignore this cheap blackmail.”
