Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s former presidential candidate, has criticized the recent fuel price hike by the Bola Tinubu administration, calling it “unfortunate and insensitive.” The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) raised fuel prices across the country, with Abuja seeing prices increase from N897 to N1030 per litre, and other regions facing similar surges. Obi expressed concern over the economic strain this will cause for Nigerians already suffering from tough conditions.
In a post on X, Obi lambasted President Tinubu, who also serves as the Minister of Petroleum, for imposing such a drastic price increase while on vacation. He stressed that this move lacks compassion and sound economic reasoning, urging the President to offer an explanation, provide alternative options, and reverse the hike.
Obi questioned the governance of the NNPCL and the role of regulatory bodies, criticizing the confusion over who holds responsibility for oversight. He emphasized that the burden of fixing this issue rests with the President and urged him to act swiftly for the sake of Nigerians struggling under worsening economic conditions.
