Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticized the recent Edo State governorship election, describing it as an example of state capture. Obi voiced his concerns on his X (formerly Twitter) account, expressing disappointment over what he believes was a flawed leadership recruitment process.
The former governor of Anambra State stated that the events in Edo over the weekend did not reflect the democratic values Nigeria strives for, but rather showcased a manipulation of power that undermines the nation’s political system.
Obi warned that any nation whose electoral processes are compromised is headed toward failure, stressing the importance of allowing systems like IReV and BVAS to function properly in safeguarding Nigeria’s elections from falsification. He called on those in positions of authority to reflect on their roles, warning that the consequences of undermining democracy today would eventually affect the future, including their children.

In his message, he urged lecturers and officials complicit in the electoral misconduct to reconsider their actions, noting the long-term damage to Nigeria’s democracy and future generations.
