On Tuesday, Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, appointed Dr. Yunusa Tanko as the Interim National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement globally. This announcement marks a strategic move by Obi as he prepares for the upcoming 2027 elections.
Dr. Tanko has a long-standing history with the Labour Party and has held several key positions. He previously served as the spokesperson and media director for Peter Obi during the Labour Party’s presidential campaign. Before his involvement with the Labour Party, Tanko was the Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council in 2015 and later became the presidential candidate for the National Conscience Party in 2019.

During the announcement, Obi stated, “Last week, I hosted an X Space session to kick off a series of initiatives aimed at establishing a robust structure for the Obidient Movement. As part of this effort, a dedicated team was created to facilitate discussions and gather input from stakeholders.”
He further added, “We need strong leadership to guide this developmental phase. After extensive consultations and feedback from members of the movement, there was a clear consensus that the role of National Coordinator should be assigned to the North. Dr. Yunusa Tanko received the most nominations from key stakeholders and engagement teams for this position.”
Obi also clarified that all current appointments, including that of Dr. Tanko, are interim until the movement’s structure is fully established. He highlighted the need for over one million leadership roles to be filled as the movement works towards building a prosperous Nigeria. “It is essential to nominate individuals who possess the competence, character, and capability to lead effectively,” he concluded.
