A nurse working at the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital in Abakiliki, Ebonyi State, lost her life due to an epidemic of Lassa fever.
According to a hospital source, Ewogu Nkechi, the nurse, passed away over the weekend and was buried right away in accordance with Lassa fever management procedures.
Since December 2019, she has been employed with AE-FUTHA’s emergency department. She was from the Ikwo Local Government Area of the State and an alumna of Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki.

Dr. Moses Ekuma, the Ebonyi State Commissioner of Health, acknowledged the Lassa fever outbreak in the state when he was asked for comment. He claimed that the state epidemiologist and other medical professionals are keeping an eye on the outbreak.
“Actually, there is an outbreak of Lassa Fever. It is not only in Ebonyi State. It affected other places more especially those areas that are prone to the outbreak. The state epidemiologist and other health team are on top of it to ensure its prevention and control,” he said.
