Owerri Residents Urge Governor Uzodinma to Address Deteriorating Roads in Ikenegbu Extension

Residents of Ikenegbu Extension, a community near Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri, Imo State, have raised concerns over the deplorable state of their road, calling on Governor Hope Uzodinma to take immediate action. The once well-paved road has deteriorated significantly, becoming a health and safety hazard for children, pregnant women, and other vulnerable residents.

The road, which now serves as an illegal dumpsite, has caused a serious public health crisis in the community. Mr. August Njoku, a concerned resident, revealed that the foul smell emanating from the waste has made it difficult for families to live comfortably. “We can’t even open our doors or windows because of the stench and mosquitoes. Our children and pregnant women are frequently falling ill,” he lamented.

During the rainy season, the situation worsens as flooding and accumulated waste make the road nearly impassable. Mrs. Gladys Anyanwu, a local teacher, expressed her frustration: “It’s nearly impossible to walk through the road during rainfall. The flood and dirt create safety risks for everyone.”

The hazardous conditions have also contributed to an increase in criminal activity. Mrs. Betty Cheta, a trader, described the road as a “death trap,” noting that some local churches have lost members due to the unsafe environment. She recounted that in 2022, the Chief of Staff to the governor, Barr. Nnamdi Anyaehie, visited the area to oversee the evacuation of waste but questioned why road construction did not follow the inspection.

Leaders in the community, including the Regional Pastor of the Community of Hashem, Owerri, Levite Ofili, have also voiced their concerns. Pastor Ofili urged the governor to prioritize the reconstruction of the road and the removal of waste to restore the community’s quality of life. “We pray that God grants Governor Uzodinma and his cabinet the wisdom to lead this state effectively,” he said.

The residents of Ikenegbu Extension are hopeful that their plea will prompt swift action from the state government, bringing much-needed relief to the area and improving the overall living conditions.

With health risks mounting and community safety in jeopardy, residents are calling for urgent intervention to prevent further deterioration. Governor Uzodinma’s response to this issue could be pivotal in restoring public confidence and enhancing the welfare of his constituents.
