Switzerland is set to host a significant peace conference for Ukraine next month, inviting more than 160 delegations, with notable absence from Russia ‘at this stage,’ as stated by the foreign ministry on Thursday.
Russia, amidst its full-scale invasion of Ukraine since February 2022, has disregarded the Lucerne event, labeling it as a US-driven agenda. Despite Switzerland’s willingness to extend an invitation, Russia remains firm in its stance, citing non-participation unless Kyiv acknowledges its annexation of roughly 20 percent of Ukraine’s territory.
The absence of Russian participation underscores the challenge of initiating a peace process, with Switzerland emphasizing the necessity of Russian involvement.
The attendance of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Joe Biden remains unconfirmed, while China’s stance, a key ally of Moscow, remains uncertain.
