Okorocha Calls for Nnamdi Kanu’s Release to Honor Late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah

Former Imo State Governor and Senator, Rochas Okorocha, has urged the Federal Government to release Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), as a tribute to the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.

Speaking during a night of tribute held in Ubah’s honor on Monday at the Nigerian Air Force Conference & Suites in Abuja, Okorocha emphasized that the release of Kanu would symbolize a significant gesture of unity and reconciliation for the Igbo community.

In his heartfelt address, Okorocha reflected on the late Senator Ubah’s plea to the Nigerian government, aligning it with a similar appeal previously made by the late President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu.

“Before his passing, Iwuanyanwu made a plea to the Federal Government. Similarly, Ifeanyi Ubah made a statement echoing this call,” Okorocha noted. Addressing Senate President Godswill Akpabio, he added, “I urge you, my brother, to convey this message on behalf of Ndi Igbo. The release of Nnamdi Kanu is the best way to honor these great leaders and allow Ndi Igbo to reconcile and rebuild their community.”

Okorocha expressed deep concern about the divisions within the Igbo community, urging peace and solidarity. He drew inspiration from the legacies of Igbo leaders such as Ikemba Odumegwu Ojukwu and Alex Ekwueme, who, despite past disagreements, now stand as symbols of reconciliation.

“The question they are asking in the afterlife is simple: ‘Why do Ndi Igbo play the politics of hate? Why do we divide ourselves?’” he said. He further highlighted the futility of political differences, emphasizing that past rivalries among Igbo leaders were now seen as inconsequential.

“Let us learn from the likes of Ojukwu and Ekwueme, who once quarreled but now stand united in the afterlife. Ndi Igbo must embrace peace for the sake of our future,” Okorocha urged.

The night of tribute brought together prominent political and public figures, including former President Goodluck Jonathan, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, former Senate Presidents Anyim Pius Anyim and Bukola Saraki, and others.

Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who represented Anambra South Senatorial District, passed away in London in July at the age of 52. Known for his contributions as a businessman and politician, Ubah would have celebrated his 53rd birthday on September 3, 2024.

His final rites are scheduled for Friday, November 22, 2024.

Okorocha’s passionate appeal underscores a broader call for reconciliation and unity within the Igbo community. By advocating for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, he seeks to bridge divides and foster a renewed sense of collective purpose among Ndi Igbo.

This gesture, he believes, would not only honor the memory of Ifeanyi Ubah but also strengthen the foundations of peace and progress in Nigeria.
