Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a prominent socio-cultural organization representing the Igbo people, has strongly criticized Bayo Onanuga, President Bola Tinubu’s spokesman, for his remarks linking the proposed “hunger protest” to Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections.
During a press conference in Awka, Anambra State, Damian Okeke-Ogene, Vice President of Ohanaeze Worldwide, expressed disapproval of Onanuga’s comments, describing them as unfounded and inappropriate. Okeke-Ogene emphasized that Onanuga should prioritize addressing the widespread hunger and hardship affecting the nation instead of targeting an innocent individual.
Okeke-Ogene condemned Onanuga’s suggestion that Nigerians should blame the former Anambra governor for any unrest resulting from the planned hunger protest, scheduled for August 1-10, 2024. He urged Onanuga to focus on alleviating the suffering of Nigerians rather than making baseless accusations against Peter Obi.

He stated, “Onanuga’s remarks are highly condemnable. The President should caution Mr. Onanuga against making such reckless statements. Instead of these accusations, Onanuga should leverage his position to work towards making Nigeria a better place for all citizens, regardless of their tribal, ethnic, or religious backgrounds.”
Furthermore, Okeke-Ogene advised Igbos across the nation to concentrate on safeguarding their properties rather than participating in the upcoming protest. He also appealed to President Tinubu to release the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who remains in detention despite court orders for his release.
