The Labour Party’s Diaspora Directorate has firmly denied any involvement in the upcoming “EndBadGovernance” protest, distancing both the party and its 2023 Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, from the event.
In a recent statement, Ambassador AJU Elumelu, Deputy Director (Diaspora) and Head of Media and Communications for the Directorate of Mobilization and Integration, stressed that reports linking the Labour Party and Mr. Obi to the protest are unfounded and baseless.
“The Labour Party and Peter Obi have consistently championed peace and lawful conduct,” Elumelu stated. “Our record, especially following the last general election, underscores our commitment to peaceful and constructive engagement in Nigeria’s political landscape. We have always prioritized the rule of law and encouraged our supporters to do the same.”
Elumelu emphasized that while the constitutional right of Nigerians to protest is acknowledged and respected, any such protest is a spontaneous exercise of citizens’ democratic rights and not orchestrated by the Labour Party. He pointed out that historical examples from countries like Kenya and Egypt illustrate that popular protests are driven by the populace’s response to governance issues.

The statement also condemned efforts by individuals, including Mr. Bayo Onanuga, to falsely associate the “EndBadGovernance” protest with the Labour Party and Peter Obi. “These false claims are misleading and dangerous, inciting division and unrest. The Labour Party values responsible and truthful communication, particularly in these sensitive times,” Elumelu added.
The Labour Party called for restraint and responsibility in public communications from government officials, highlighting the importance of avoiding inflammatory and unfounded accusations for the nation’s stability and unity.
“Constructive dialogue and positive policy changes are the keys to addressing Nigeria’s challenges, not scapegoating and incendiary rhetoric,” the statement concluded. The Labour Party reaffirmed its dedication to contributing to Nigeria’s progress through constructive opposition and sound policies, urging all Nigerians to remain peaceful, law-abiding, and focused on collective efforts to build a better nation.
