The State’s Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has launched the “Information Not Disinformation” campaign in an attempt to combat insecurity in Imo.
At the Command’s headquarters in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, Mr. Matthew Ovye, the NSCDC Commandant for the state, launched the campaign.
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Imo State Council’s Correspondents’ Chapel came up with the “Information Not Disinformation” campaign, which aims to combat insecurity through factual reporting and responsive journalism by forming strong connections with the state’s security agencies.
The chapel’s “apt initiative” was praised by the Commandant, who also noted that the timing of the campaign was perfect, given the state’s current battle against insecurity and the impact of misinformation and disinformation.
He expressed optimism that the campaign will dispel false information and boost business activity for the state’s growth and development.
He stated that the Corps was still dedicated to safeguarding vital national resources, employing the Commandant-General (CG), Ahmed Abubakar Audi’s special intelligence squad in addition to its anti-vandal and agro rangers teams.

He expressed gratitude to the CG and Sen. Hope Uzodinma, the governor of Imo State, for their ongoing support, which has made it possible for security agencies, the media, and other participants in the battle against insecurity to operate in a supportive atmosphere.
“Security is everybody’s business and our successes cannot be complete without the support of the media, especially the Correspondents’ Chapel.
“My CG has asked me to convey his regards to you and his commitment to correct information dissemination facilitated by your Chapel.
“We have continued to collaborate with other security agencies and I can assure you that we are winning the war against insecurity,” he said.
However, while the Corps works to protect pre-secondary schools throughout the state through its “Safe Schools” project, he urged journalists in the state to collaborate with the Corps.
The Commandant was commended for his “ebullient response to challenges of insecurity in the state” by Mr. Chinonso Alozie, Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, in his speech.
He informed the Corps of the Chapel’s dedication to professional reporting and stated the Chapel’s willingness for productive partnerships to ensure the campaign’s success.
“We are currently sensitising security agencies in the state on the need for effective partnerships for more responsive journalism, which aims to inform rather than misinform or disinform the public.
“Soon, when we conclude the sensitisation visits, we will proceed with an official launch of the ‘Information Not Disinformation’ campaign and the era of misinformation by quacks will be in the past,” he said.
The campaign’s introduction and Alozie’s gift of a partnership letter to the Commandant were the highlights of the occasion.
Executives from the Chapel and management personnel from the NSCDC in Imo State are among those in attendance.
