NSCDC Arraigns Four Individuals for Vandalizing Enugu Electricity Agency Underground Cables

The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arraigned four individuals—Moses Timothy, Joefrey Lawrence, Augustine Abila, and Caleb Kamiru—before a Federal High Court in Enugu. They face a two-count charge for allegedly vandalizing underground armored cables owned by the Enugu State Rural Electrification Agency.

The defendants reportedly committed the offense on July 1, 2024. The NSCDC emphasized the severe consequences of such vandalism on the state’s water and electricity infrastructure.

According to court documents (FHC/EN/CR/140/2024), the defendants conspired to unlawfully remove the underground cables at Kingsway/Aria Road, GRA, Enugu North LGA. This act is in violation of Section 3 (6) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act, Cap. M17 L.F.N 2004, and is punishable under Section 1 (3) of the same Act.

The second count also charges the defendants under the same provisions, highlighting the gravity of their actions. Despite pleading not guilty, the presiding judge, Justice F.O. Ogunbanjo, ordered their remand in a correctional facility. The case is adjourned for hearing on September 24, 25, and 26.

After the court session, Prosecution Counsel Amaka Ekoh addressed the media, expressing the determination of both the NSCDC and the Enugu State Government to eradicate vandalism. Ekoh highlighted the detrimental effects of such criminal activities on essential services like street lighting and water supply.

“The Enugu State Government and the NSCDC are working together to eliminate vandalism. Many street lights are non-functional because vandals have destroyed the underground cables,” Ekoh stated. “Our officers are now intensifying efforts to apprehend and prosecute these criminals. Those found guilty will face jail time.”
