Northern Group Denounces Cybersecurity Levy as ‘Unacceptable Extortion’

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has vehemently opposed the newly introduced 0.5 per cent cybersecurity levy set to be imposed on all bank transactions. This levy, mandated by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has sparked outrage among Nigerians, particularly in the northern region.

In a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, the CNG criticized the levy as a manifestation of the government’s insensitivity to the economic struggles faced by Nigerians. The group decried the decision, labeling it as another burden on citizens already grappling with economic hardships.

According to the CNG, the imposition of this levy mirrors the government’s disregard for the welfare of its people, especially in light of recent increases in fuel prices and electricity tariffs. The group emphasized that such measures only exacerbate the financial strain on ordinary Nigerians.

While acknowledging the importance of cybersecurity, the CNG argued that the levy is unjustifiable, especially in a country where many are still reeling from the effects of economic policies that have eroded their purchasing power. The group also questioned the transparency surrounding previous banking charges, urging the CBN to provide a detailed account of stamp duty collections over the past decade.

In light of these concerns, the CNG called for the immediate withdrawal of the levy and urged the CBN to explore alternative solutions that do not further burden the Nigerian populace. The group emphasized the need for policies that prioritize the well-being of citizens and advocated for greater transparency in government actions affecting the economy.
