The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has identified negligence and failure to follow safety protocols as the cause of the tragic boat accident that led to the death of Nollywood actor Junior Pope and seven others.
Speaking during a safety awareness campaign in Onitsha, NIWA’s Managing Director, Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, stressed that the victims’ failure to register the boat or wear life jackets contributed significantly to the mishap. He also noted that distractions caused by the passengers’ actions inside the boat led to a collision with a wooden object, which eventually capsized the vessel.
NIWA emphasized the critical need for boat operators and passengers to adhere strictly to safety regulations. These include proper boat registration and the mandatory use of life jackets to prevent similar accidents in the future. The agency also warned of consequences such as arrest, boat seizure, and legal action for non-compliance.

In light of rising safety concerns, NIWA announced plans to collaborate with local stakeholders and state governments to raise awareness about water safety, particularly among communities along the River Niger, in preparation for the anticipated 2024 flood.
The sensitization event featured live demonstrations on life jacket usage, drawing attention to the importance of water safety measures. Attendees included boat operators, community leaders, and other stakeholders, all of whom were urged to prioritize safety on Nigeria’s waterways to avoid further tragedies.
NIWA reaffirmed its dedication to promoting safe practices across the nation’s inland waterways and called on all parties involved to play their part in ensuring a safer environment.
