Nigeria’s 64th Independence: Okonjo-Iweala Praises Resilience and Entrepreneurial Spirit Despite Challenges

 

As Nigeria marks its 64th Independence Anniversary, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), has applauded Nigerians for their resilience and exceptional entrepreneurial zeal in the face of ongoing economic challenges.

 

Taking to X.com on Tuesday, Okonjo-Iweala highlighted the significance of the anniversary, acknowledging both international and domestic challenges that have tested the nation. She urged Nigerians to take pride in their unique heritage, emphasizing that the country is not only diverse but also home to some of the world’s most innovative and enterprising people.

 

She wrote: “Though times are tough internationally and nationally, we should appreciate that we are from one of the most interesting countries in the world with some of the most exciting and entrepreneurial people in the world! I certainly appreciate and thank God for this!”

In related news, President Bola Tinubu, in his Independence Day address, assured Nigerians that his administration is committed to reducing the cost of living through targeted reforms aimed at creating a more sustainable economy. He reiterated that the government is taking steps to alleviate the pressure of rising living costs while undertaking critical adjustments to strengthen economic structures.

 

Tinubu’s broadcast comes at a time when the population’s concerns about the economy are mounting. However, the President expressed optimism about the government’s capacity to implement long-term solutions that will better serve citizens.

 

In response to the Independence Anniversary, other prominent figures have also commented on the state of the nation. Governor Seyi Makinde extended transport and agriculture loan relief schemes to provide some cushion for citizens, while Governor Dapo Abiodun recognized the anxieties about Nigeria’s future and called for urgent action to address them.
