Nigerian Senate Passes Bill to Increase Judges’ Salaries and Integrity

The Nigerian Senate has taken a significant step towards bolstering the integrity of the judiciary by passing a bill aimed at increasing the salaries and allowances of judges at all levels. This move, which marks the bill’s second reading, comes as a response to the need for judicial officers to receive fair compensation for their crucial role in upholding justice.

Deputy Majority Leader, Lola Ashiru, spearheaded the debate, emphasizing the importance of enhancing the integrity of the judicial arm of government through improved remuneration. Echoing this sentiment, Tahir Monguno of Borno North expressed confidence that higher pay for judges would help deter corruption and empower them to deliver just and fair judgments without undue influence.

Orji Kalu of Abia North highlighted the necessity of this initiative, asserting that it is imperative to ensure the judiciary’s comfort and effectiveness. He commended the executive branch for recognizing the significance of increasing judges’ salaries and urged similar attention to other sectors of the economy.

Emmanuel Udende of Benue North-East underscored the detrimental impact of inadequate pay on judicial morale and performance. He stressed the importance of addressing the longstanding issue of meager salaries, noting its adverse effects on the judiciary’s ability to fulfill its duties effectively.

The bill’s passage signifies a commitment to strengthening the judiciary and promoting a fair and impartial legal system in Nigeria.
