Nigerian Customs Begins Food Distribution, Sells 25kg of Rice for 10,000

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has initiated a program to alleviate food scarcity concerns by offering seized rice to the public at a reduced price of N10,000 per 25kg bag.

The announcement was made by Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, the Comptroller General of NCS, in Lagos. Adeniyi outlined that interested individuals need to submit a form containing personal details, including the National Identification Number (NIN), to obtain a barcode for collecting the rice.

To streamline the purchasing process, ten registration points will be established across the region. Adeniyi emphasized that the primary aim of selling seized items is to stabilize food prices and support the local currency.

He cautioned against unauthorized resale of the rice, stating that stringent measures will be taken against violators. Adeniyi emphasized that the initiative targets economically disadvantaged Nigerians, including artisans, educators, healthcare workers, and religious organizations.

In addition to selling seized rice, the NCS also highlighted efforts to prevent the illegal export of food items, which poses a threat to domestic food security. Over 20,000 bags of assorted grains and other essential commodities have been intercepted at the borders to safeguard the nation’s food sufficiency.

The NCS reiterated its commitment to transparency, accountability, and serving the public interest. They emphasized their dedication to protecting borders and ensuring the well-being of all Nigerians while aligning with national policies for economic prosperity.
