Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has taken a firm stance against President Bola Tinubu’s recent remarks that compared Nigeria’s struggles to those of other nations. Obi emphasizes that Nigeria requires actionable solutions rather than downplaying its issues through comparisons.
During an Eid-el-Kabir celebration in Lagos, President Tinubu stated, “Yes, there is poverty; there is suffering in the land. We are not the only people facing such, but we must face our challenges.” This comment sparked criticism from Obi, who responded on social media, urging Nigerian leaders to focus on providing concrete solutions.
Obi highlighted the pressing issues Nigeria faces, including widespread poverty, insecurity, hunger, poor education, high infant mortality, corruption, unemployment, and a significant income gap between the rich and the poor. He expressed his frustration with leaders who minimize these challenges by comparing Nigeria to other countries instead of offering specific plans to address them.

“The problems facing Nigeria are well-known to all Nigerians,” Obi stated. “We are the poverty capital of the world, among the most insecure people on earth, among the hungriest, have poor education quality and the highest number of out-of-school children, high infant mortality, corruption, unemployment, the highest income gap between the poor and the rich, high corruption perception index, infrastructure and healthcare challenges, and more.”
Obi criticized leaders who, rather than tackling these issues head-on, make statements like “we are not the only ones struggling with poverty and hunger.” He stressed that such generalizations dismiss the unique and severe struggles of Nigerians.
“What Nigerians need is a comprehensive approach to address our country’s unique challenges,” Obi said. “Instead of merely acknowledging that other countries face similar challenges, we need to hear a thorough plan of action to tackle our unique struggles.”
Obi called for a clear vision and a detailed roadmap to overcome Nigeria’s obstacles, emphasizing that visionary leadership is about providing direction, guidance, solutions, and reassurance in times of crisis. He likened this to a pilot who not only announces turbulence but also assures passengers of their safety and takes steps to ensure a smooth journey.
“We require concrete solutions and a clear vision to address these issues, not comparisons that downplay our circumstances,” Obi urged. “A true leader offers tangible solutions, not mere reminders that others face similar challenges.”
